Madi is a positive and innovative individual, who decided straight after college to start her career at Williams Shipping Group, by applying for a business administration apprenticeship. She spent 15 months as an apprentice, gaining experience across the business, and finally, she was promoted to a Hire Controller at Willbox when she completed her apprenticeship.
After I finished college, I chose to complete an apprenticeship rather than go to university as I prefer to have a more hands-on approach to learning and wanted to dive straight into the world of work. I chose Williams shipping for my apprenticeship as I had always had an interest in working within the logistics sector and thought that this would be a great opportunity to get started with my career within the industry. I initially started my apprenticeship within the transport division of Williams shipping as a business administration assistant but was transferred to Willbox six months into my apprenticeship where I got to experience both the sales and hire side of the division where I found a true interest and passion for my work.
As I mentioned before, I was working in the business administration sector and I had all different kinds of responsibilities, and I never had the same day. Working with different people and in different positions, makes you more adaptive and you get the chance to have more understanding of the company. When I moved to Willbox, I was in a completely different environment and I had the chance to learn more about this sector. Tom, my mentor, taught me so much about sales, and working within the hire team gave me a head start in gaining experience in the role I would go into after my apprenticeship.
I would say that the biggest strength that I have gained is understanding Williams Shipping and Willbox. Being an apprentice and working in the different divisions and doing a variety of jobs helps you dive into the company and learn its values and vision. I’m glad that I had a variety of tasks instead of doing the same job because in that way I have learned a bit from everything.
I was so thrilled when I was offered a permanent position at Willbox! I was given the opportunity to go into a full-time career within the hire team and have been given my own depots to manage. I like the company, the working environment, and most importantly the people. It’s a fun working atmosphere. Whenever I have a problem there will be someone to help me and the Managing Director of Willbox - Chris Williams, is understanding and he is always available to help.
I would just say don’t give up and just give it time because at first, it can be really hard and challenging, but after a while, you get used to it. Someone might find out that they don't like the chosen industry or that they are passionate about something else, as I was more passionate about hire rather than business administration. It gets easier as a growing opportunity and everything will fall into place!
